5.12 Sichuan Earthquake Relief

Thanks to God’s providence, many collapsed rural churches in Hubei , hit by severe snowstorm earlier this year, begin to stand up again one by one. However, hardly had we finished all visitation to the storm-stricken churches than an even more horrific catastrophe happened in Sichuan , China .

Our three-day Hike for Lovewas successfully held in the mountainous region of Wufeng from 9 th to 11 th May, one day before the earthquake. Its aim, as if we had planned ahead, was to raise support for Emergency Relief Fund! Pastor Mary of Hubei Church and I rushed to Sichuan to visit the quake-hit zone. We met with Sichuan Christian leaders in Chengdu and encouraged the brothers and sisters in Dujiangyan. We wired 210,000RMB immediately for urgent relief work in the region through local churches. For long-term, we are planning to help them rebuild the churches and pave way for setting up church-run social services in the hope that the calamity may turn to a lasting blessing and witness to God’s grace. I just returned from my third trip to the quake zone. Much to our delight, many churches in the area had already started various caring ministries in the most needed places. Our next trip (10-12 July) will confirm whether our mobile clinic service may extend to quake zone so that more people in rural areas can be served. Also, we are kicking off a relief project named ‘A Cup of Cold Water’.

Medicare therefore appeals to all the churches and friends to pray incessantly and give prayer and financial support to the quake-hit area. It is just the beginning of a long journey of recovery, but our concerted effort will surely make a difference in the long run.
