January 2009
Dear Friends, Prayer Partners & Supporters,
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid . John 14:27 (NIV)
2008 has been a year hard to forget: Snowstorm , Myanmar cyclone, earthquake(s), and the recent global financial crisis, to name but a few. MediCare has been catching up with the dire needs in China and worked closely with both local and Chinese churches to combat such difficult situations as a relief and resource agent. God has shown His mercy towards the victims while giving us peace and safety as we frequently travelled in the frontline during snowstorm and earthquake. Without your prayers and support, we could not have started such daunting projects, especially in the quake zone.
Medicare has been blessed as we have a relatively small but efficient staff team. Harriet, our Project Supervisor, has spent most of her time in Yichang office coordinating and monitoring our projects. Jean, our Assistant Project Supervisor (mainly Education), works closely with our Mainland coordinator Zhang Qin for student support programs. Eunice, who mainly stays in Hong Kong office, has been super effective as she manages the accounts and receipts. Thank the Lord for providing us with Aldric, a computer animator, who volunteered for a few months during snowstorm and earthquake before joining us in October as temporary staff. Also, Dr. Liu Song Qiao, former Superintendant of Fengjie People’s Hospital, joins our team as Medical Supervisor in 2009. Please remember our team, including our directors and advisors, in your prayers.
Summary of projects and events in 2008:
- Snowstorm church rebuilding work
Medicare helped the rebuilding/remodeling of 10 churches in 7 different areas.
30 participants and several guests from the Mainland participated in the Hike which took place in Wufeng, Yichang. One day after the hike, the earthquake hit Sichuan , which prompted our relief action.
- Sichuan Earthquake Relief
We visited Sichuan quake zones 12 times in 8 months to coordinate and plan our long-term relief work. A mobile clinic and two service vans donated to Chengdu , Mianzhu and Bazhong churches respectively are in use already, reaching the disaster victims in remote areas. Last summer, we organized three camps for the quake zone kids and launched ‘A Cup of Cold Water’ Action. In November, we embarked on a ‘Warmth Action’ trip, which provided about 7000 households with winter necessities. We also provided facilities for schools, clinics, and elderly centres, setting up libraries in severely hit areas. Please watch some video clips about our earthquake relief work:

Several clean water projects and construction works of school facilities were completed in Fengjie and Yichang areas. Right after snowstorm, we funded Yiling’s tea replanting project. We provided medical subsidies to needy patients and living subsidies to families in various parts of Hubei , Fengjie, and Sichuan . We are also supporting 180 high school and college students’ tuition fees.
We organized over a dozen vision and service trips for churches, as well as individuals like volunteer doctors and English tutors. Their participation helped spread our mission and vision and enriched the lives of the locals in the Mainland.
185 senior high and college students are supported in 08-09. We offer tuition fee or living expenses ranging from RMB1000 to 5000 per student according to their needs. Our staff visit them at least twice a year (once for college student) to encourage them and to ensure that they got the message of love and care from the donors.
New Development Opportunities:
- Chain of Loving Heart Clinics (2009: Dazhou, Luzhou, Chengdu in Sichuan )
- Rehabilitation/Social Service centres with Sichuan churches
- Micro-financing and projects for individuals and churches for sustainable development
- Setting up elderly home with hospice care
- Mentorship program with Medicare-supported students
May the Lord of abundance bless you and your family richly in the New Year!
In His Love
